Walking in & around Fowey in Cornwall The Fowey Estuary is an ideal place for walking whether you are a keen walker or just enjoy leisurely strolls, with its mix of cliff top paths and woodland walks there is something for everyone. This page includes information on accessing popular routes and other ideas to help get you started. Local Walks Town Walks - If you are interested in exploring the town centres of Fowey, Lostwithiel or Polruan then there is plenty of opportunity to wander their interesting streets. Fowey offers daily, year round guided walks, whilst Polruan and Lostwithiel both offer weekly guided walks between Easter and September. For more details see our Trips and Tours page. Alternatively you could use the National Trust Guide No 21 for walks in the area. Hall Walk - By far the most popular of the estuary walks, it offers stunning views of the estuary and out to sea. It is a circular walk that follows the banks of the river and utilises both ferries, via Bodinnick, Pont Creek and Polruan or vice versa. You can also divert to St Wyllow Church from Pont and from there go onto Pencarrow Head and join the coast path for a longer walk to Polruan. It is not suitable for pushchairs and in places it is steep. Between Easter and September you can do the Hall Walk with a guide. The Coast Path - Much of the coastline in this area belongs to the National Trust and offers stunning views of the coast as well as some rigorous and invigorating walks. From Fowey you can access the coastal footpath heading west towards St Austell Bay passing Gribbin Head. The starting point is the path at Readymoney Cove and between Fowey and Par there are several points at which you can pick up an inland path returning to Fowey, or you can pick up the First Kernow No 24 bus in Par From Polruan on the other side of the Fowey River the coast path heads east towards Polperro and Looe and eventually on to Plymouth. The starting point can be found at the top of St Saviours Hill (well signed throughout the village), from Pencarrow you can take a path towards St Wyllow Church and on to the Hall Walk (partially on the road). If you wish to walk between Polruan and Polperro or Looe we advise catching a bus to Polperro or Looe and walking back as public transport is limited, see our Public Transport page. For more detailed information see the National Trust Guide No 22 River Walks - Away from the coast and with a few miles of riverbank between Fowey and Lostwithiel or Lerryn there is plenty more to explore. In the lower reaches of the Estuary, although you can walk from Fowey to Golant or Bodinnick to Mixtow the paths tend to run across the top of the hills and sometimes through woodland. However, head further inland to Lerryn and the path through Lerryn Wood runs close to the waters edge and with a loop at the end of the woods you can return to Lerryn. Alternatively cross the bridge from the car park at Lerryn and you can walk on the other side around to St Winnow before cutting inland to return to Lerryn. Walks Further Afield The Saints' Way - A long distance footpath that traverses the county from Padstow to Fowey. It links many of the holy places associated with Celtic saints from the 5th - 7th Century who travelled from Ireland across Cornwall to Rome, Jerusalem or Santiago de Compostela. The walk is almost 30 miles in distance and can be stretched over two or three days. Luxulyan Valley - Part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, there are several walks exploring the Valley's mining heritage. Luxulyan Valley can be accessed from the A390 at St Blazey by car, it is also accessible by public transport. Cardinham Woods - A series of circular walks of varying levels in Forestry Commission woodland just outside Bodmin. Parking and on site cafe available as well as picnic and barbeque area. Cardinham woods is signed from the A38 at Bodmin. Guided Walks Much of the area around Fowey has strong associations with Daphne du Maurier and her writing. Opportunities to explore this further are offered by a number of guides who specialise in leading walks and giving illustrated talks about Daphne du Maurier's Cornwall, in particular her links with the area and the locations which appear in her novels. Kenneth Grahame author of Wind in The Willows stayed in Fowey and was inspired by the area. Guided boat trips based on the origins of Wind in The Willows are available during the summer season but are dependent on the tide. Advice for Walkers Footpaths can be very strenuous in places and there may be long stretches without refreshments or facilities. They may also be very muddy after a spell of bad weather. If you are planning to walk using a footpath it is a good idea to have good footwear and be prepared by taking refreshments with you. Some of the guide books available include circular walks that take in parts of the coast path and bring you back to your starting point via an inland route. Please remember to follow the Country Code. If you are walking and intend to use public transport at some stage, please check the details before your departure, as in some cases services are infrequent. Fowey Estuary "The Hall Walk" A circular classic walk of 4 miles, including two ferries and spectacular views of the Fowey estuary. A couple of climbs/descents but much of the walk is roughly level, contouring above the river and Pont Pill. We leave as foot passengers on the Bodinnick vehicle ferry and return on the Polruan foot ferry. Optional opportunities for cream teas or other refreshments on our return to Fowey. South West Coast Path, Par & Charlestown Starting at Par with short bus trip to join the Coast Path at Duporth and passing through Charlestown's Historic harbour - a Poldark filming location - then walking round St Austell Bay on rugged terrain across low cliff tops. Finishing at the Par start point at the end of this 3 mile hike. You will need suitable clothing and footwear for rugged terrain and all weathers, a water bottle (1 litre is recommended) and a rucksack or other suitable carrier. PUBLIC TRANSPORT FARES INCLUDED. See available dates and book here . Guided Walk in Cornwall's Clay Country Starting at St Austell this is a varied guided walk on the Clay Trails above St Austell. Well graded paths with little ascent. A short bus trip to join the Trail at Carluddon then a walk on rugged terrain across moorland tops and wooded valleys, crossing streams and visiting the café at Wheal Martyn. Walking along scenic disused railway tracks back to St Austell at the end of this 5.75 mile hike. See available dates and book here . Mevagissey Coast & Country Circular Starting from Mevagissey on the Coast Path we walk on rugged terrain via Portmellon and Chapel Point. We return via a woodland Nature Reserve and the grounds of a 17th Century Manor, to Mevagissey for the end of this 4 mile hike. You will need suitable clothing and footwear for rugged terrain and all weathers, a water bottle (1 litre is recommended) and a rucksack or other suitable carrier. See available dates and book here . South West Coast Path, Lansallos & Polruan Starting from Polruan with a short bus trip to join the Coast Path at Lansallos (NB available weekdays only) then walk on rugged terrain across cliff tops, crossing streams and skirting above the stunning Lantic Bay with its white sands and turquoise waters. There are several moderate climbs (mostly stepped), totalling 360m of ascent. Pencarrow gives expansive views across St Austell Bay to Dodman Point and the Lizard on a clear day. Looking east, there are views towards Polperro and beyond. Optional visit to the well-preserved 14th century blockhouse at the end of this 4.5 mile hike. Child Friendly Information Fowey Cornwall Visiting anywhere with children can seem challenging, this page aims to answer some of the questions you may have regarding a trip to the area. Whether you choose a meal out, a trip to the beach or crabbing on the quay, the area is fun and accessible for all. Getting Around Fowey Fowey is built on a hillside and access to the town centre can be steep and include steps. Look out for alternative routes without steps designed for prams. For instance: On entering Fowey follow signs to Caffa Mill car park for a reasonably flat walk into the town. You will also find a longer scenic walk into the town marked from the Main car park. The roads are very narrow in Fowey and pavements are limited. Please be aware that traffic including large delivery lorries use the roads. Public Toilets and Baby Changing Readymoney Beach - baby changing in the ladies toilets (summer only). Main Car Park Fowey - baby changing in the disabled toilets. Town Quay Fowey - baby changing in the disabled toilets. Caffa Mill - baby changing facilities in the disabled toilets Eating Out Most restaurants, pubs and cafes in Fowey are welcoming to families. The majority have high chairs and offer either a children’s menu or child size portions. Some also offer baby changing facilities. If you want to eat a specific restaurant it is advisable to ring ahead before your visit to ensure they have the facilities suited to your party. You will find details in our Where to Stay section. The Beach Visit our guide to local Beaches for details of beaches and the facilities available. Always check the tide times before visiting the beaches to ensure that there is some sand! The best beach for swimming is Readymoney with a swimming area and moored platform. Watch out for weaver fish, a spiny fish that hides under the wet sand during the summer months, extremely painful if stood on, best avoided by wearing cheap beach shoes. Crabbing Good spots for catching crabs are Albert Quay Steps pontoon, the slipway on Passage Street and the riverfront at Caffa Mill, or the Quay in Polruan. Crab lines and buckets and bait are available from several retailers. Please be aware of boats landing and please return the crabs when you have finished. The Aquarium Open between Easter and the end of September and situated on Town Quay. All fish are caught in local waters and are returned to the sea in the autumn. See eels, bass, turbot, mullet, octopus, lobsters, crabs and much more. Friendly fish and a touch pool to get close up. Walk to Readymoney Cove Readymoney is a safe sandy cove with toilets and a shop. From the town centre, head up Lostwithiel Street and turn left along the Esplanade. Walk for about 15 minutes with great views down to the harbour, boats and blockhouses. A relatively flat walk on a not too busy road suitable for buggies, there is not always pavement. Once there you can take the footpath or cross the beach and take the wooden steps leading to St Catherines Castle, a ruined castle, free and open to the public. Boat Trips During the summer months take a 45 minute boat trip around the harbour. From Town Quay you will go up river beyond the docks and then out to the harbour mouth. Lots to see in safe, stable cruisers, booking and departures are from the Town Quay. Alternatively you can hire boats from the town quay or by booking with other hire businesses. All will offer life jackets and brief instruction on driving and safety. Our Directory contains an On the Water page with details of boat hire and other water activities. Playgrounds There is a recreation ground and play park situated at Squires Field. Squires Field is shown on our town map . In Polruan you will find the playground at the top of the hill by St Saviours Car Park. Other Activities There are many more activities to do and places to visit if you wish to travel outside of Fowey. You may like to hire bikes with baby carriers, visit a leisure centre, some of which run children’s activities during the holidays, or visit one of Cornwall’s numerous attractions.
