Encounter Cornwall

Cornwall Tourism Award winner Encounter Cornwall has been running guided canoe trips and kayak hire since 2006 from our quiet, safe and sheltered village base in Golant at the heart of the Fowey Estuary.

Our year round kayak trips are an ideal introduction to the Fowey’s tidal waters, and are suitable for both families and those new to kayaking. We also hire to experienced paddlers.  Explore its Creeks & Backwaters on the high tide – or on the low tide venture down to view it's Wildlife and historic Waterfronts.  On both trips you will be paddling through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Marine Conservation Area teeming with wildlife that includes kingfishers, herons, egrets, cormorants, various waders and if you’re lucky a seal or dolphin.

Our price includes all necessary equipment, leaving you free to enjoy an experience which for many is the highlight of their holiday in Cornwall. We operate throughout the year and only need a minimum of two people to run a trip.

With options for everyone from the complete beginner to those who want to be challenged - come and join us on the Fowey and as we say "go with the flow"!

Explore the River Fowey at your own pace

From our quiet Golant village base, a world away from Fowey's busy waterfronts, our Kayak, Canoe and SUP / Stand Up Paddle Board Hire service allows those with previous experience the chance to explore the Fowey River at their own pace. Standard hire is for up to 4 hours, and while you can request a departure time we suggest you paddle with the tides at the times we recommmend. On the high tide you can paddle the Creeks and Backwaters from Golant, and enjoy the unique scenery and varied wildlife. Low tide paddles take you down to Fowey Harbour and its historic waterfronts. We can also arrange full day (8 hours) hire periods for those intent on some more serious water based exploration of the estuary and its many contrasts.

Whatever your plans, kayak, canoe and SUP hire gives you complete freedom to explore at your own pace - and perhaps stop for a quiet Creekside picnic or just a rest amongst the peaceful beauty of it's foreshores. With off the beaten track villages to visit and the coastal port of Fowey and Polruan to discover, your paddle is the key to unlocking this magical area.

About the Owners

Encounter Cornwall is run by David and Karen from their village base in Golant – two miles up the estuary from Fowey’s busy waterfronts.

David has been leading trips for most of his life. Previous to Encounter Cornwall his “patch” was the world – leading groups and travelling independently in over 100 countries from Mongolia to Timbuctoo – and from Bora Bora to the summit of Kilimanjaro. More recently sailing became a passion, qualifying as a Yachtmaster and competing in three Fastnet races before moving to the Fowey Estuary. After getting to know a little about a lot of the world he now focuses on getting intimate with this little patch of Cornwall. The abundant estuary wildlife; the subtle changes of the seasons and tides; the fascinating local and natural history; and in getting to know the many characters who live around the estuary.

Karen initially trained as a musician, and in order to help fund her studies ran a business designing and printing textiles. After moving to Cornwall in 2002, she studied horticulture at the Duchy College, and made the great outdoors her office! Now, the office space extends to the water, and her multitasking skills are put to good use being in charge of the creative side of Encounter Cornwall, along with the social media.
