In Victorian times Fowey harbour was full of ships, many locally built and locally owned. These wooden sailing ships travelled the world and share-ownership was widespread across the area. The community in Fowey and Polruan shared the benefits and risks and waited patiently for their ships to come home. Their ships, which traded in fruit, clay, coal and many other items, brought wealth to some which is reflected in the houses that were built in both Fowey and Polruan. Was Polruan the ‘money side’ after all? Join Helen to hear about these local men and women.
Helen is a nationally-known historian and author with a particular love of maritime subjects.
