About

INSPIRED BY THE FOWEY RIVER

During this year’s Du Maurier Festival two local artists have combined to present ceramics and abstract paintings at their home studios from May 12 – 21. Inspired by the Fowey River, their work evokes light, texture and the unique spirit of this special place.

Barry Marshall-Johnson presents new ceramics, both traditional pieces showing the colours and decoration derived from local materials and sculptural forms that evoke the hard physical aspects of the shoreline. Central to his work at Westcliff Pottery is the use of locally found materials for decoration and in this exhibition it is appropriate that all the clays, beach sand and ash have been gathered in or near the Fowey River and combined to create unique textures and glaze effects. Showing at 22 Tower Park, Fowey (near Readymoney)

Julia Cooper has made watercolour notes of a multitude of greys, whites and greens while overlooking the river and she has transposed these on to hand-made papers or reclaimed timber. Here she presents a collection of abstract pieces, a pared down simplification of soft, colour and form. She will also present a collection of abstract constructions using the discarded timbers of classic wooden boats from the Fowey River some of which are all that is left from craft which have been on the river for fifty years or more. Showing at 4 St. Fimbarrus Road, Fowey.
