Title: Ceramic Teddy Painting

Times: 11.00am to 4.00pm. This is a drop in session, so no need to pre-book.
Summary: Want to do something creative with the kids? We are holding a paint your own teddy workshop. You will be able to choose from a selection of teddies to paint. You will be using ceramic paints which we will apply a clear glaze over and fire it in the kiln ready for you to come back to collect.
Equipment & materials: Ceramic teddy bears and paints are provided.
You will produce: A piece of painted pottery, which will be fired in our electric kiln.
Collection/delivery: Your item will usually be ready within ten to 14 days. You can either collect your item from Wheal Martyn or we can post it to you. If you would like it posted please select this option when you book online.

Title: May the Fun Be With You Trail

Summary: Following ‘Space Day’ at the start of May, Wheal Martyn’s half term trail is all inspired by space! China clay has been used as an ingredient and filler in many ordinary things we use every day. But it has also been used in extraordinary things like heat shields.

Title: May the Fun Be With You Activities

Summary: Following ‘Space Day’ at the start of May, Wheal Martyn’s half term activities are all inspired by space! Get creative with a range of activities including clay play, painting, using recycled materials and arts and crafts elements. Make your own planet or alien out of clay, paint a solar system or spaceship! Take your unique creation home with you to remember your visit.

Title: Coil Pot Building Workshop
Date: Saturday 31 May 2025 & Friday 11 July 2025

Summary: Have you ever wanted to have a go at building a ceramic pot? Well this is your chance to have a go and get creative.
In this workshop you will be shown how to build your very own pot using coils of clay. You will be guided through the process step by step, and then shown various techniques to decorate your pot and apply coloured slips.
Once dry, which usually takes 7 to 10 days, your pot will go off to be fired in our electric kiln. A clear glaze will then be applied and it will be fired again ready for you to come back in to collect.
No experience necessary, just a willingness to try.
Equipment & materials: Clay, coloured slips and tools are provided. We recommend that you bring an apron along.
You will produce: A small coil pot which will be fired twice in our electric kiln.
Collection/delivery: Your item will usually be ready within ten to 14 days. You can either collect your item from Wheal Martyn or we can post it to you. If you would like it posted please select this option when you book online.

Title: Barrett’s Privateers at Wheal Martyn

Summary: Based on the Cornish side of the beautiful Tamar Valley, Barrett’s Privateers formed through the joy of a capella singing. Since forming in 2019, the group have been honoured to perform at a range of events from the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival to the highly acclaimed Rock Oyster Festival.

Summary: Enjoy a guided nature walk around the 26-acre historic Wheal Martyn grounds led by our site Ranger, highlighting the abundance of nature that calls the former Victorian clay works and wider grounds home. You’ll also hear about some of the habitat improvements made during the past year and plans for the future. Price includes admission to the wider museum after the walk.

Title: Helm DeVegas at Wheal Martyn
Dates: Thursday 5 June 2025
Summary: Described as “a treat to the auditory senses” Helm & the ASB are from Cornwall. Their sound is a lush blanket of harmonies, draped over a twisting landscape of stories. The songs tell tales of Helm's life, travels and of himself. Mix in some sweet country slide guitar and a group of fine musicians and the end result is a collection of heartfelt songs that take you on a journey through the eyes of the author. In the short space of time that they have been on the road, they have amassed a good loyal following. The forthcoming album 'Superheroes' is currently in the final recording stages and will hopefully be released later this year.

Summary: Join our site team behind the scenes before we open to the general public to get the Scheduled Ancient Monument ready for the day. Help with diverting water, sluices and priming of the slurry pump to wake our water wheels and learn about Victorian engineering and the china clay industry too. Enjoy the peace of our site early in the morning, look out for wildlife before enjoying a crib time breakfast bap in our cafe. Feel free to explore the museum and site at your leisure for the rest of the day.

Summary: Go wild with creativity and unleash the artist within as you paint onto ceramic from our earthenware pottery selection, in this fun and creative workshop. Learn different glazing techniques and an opportunity to paint a wider range of bisque ware.

Title: Mevagissey Shanty – Joint Fundraiser

Summary: A new Welsh language conversation group, meeting in the café at Wheal Martyn on the first and third Tuesday of each month for a fun and social morning, speaking and practising Welsh (Cymraeg).
Cornish (Kernewek) and Welsh (Cymraeg) are sister languages - alongside Breton (Brezhoneg). They all stem from ‘Common Brittonic’ which would have been the language spoken across the majority of Britain at one point. We are excited to introduce a conversation group for another Celtic language alongside our popular Cornish language mornings.
Hosted by Kim Hopewell, this is a regular opportunity for Welsh speakers of all abilities to learn new phrases or engage in fluent conversations.
